Kiln Firing Service
Introducing Kenneth, our Skutt KMT1027 electric kiln.
We offer a top loading kiln with circular shelves at 52cm wide each. The chamber is 68 cms deep, with an opening of 60 cms. You can hire one shelf at a time (max 15 cms tall work) or a half or whole kiln. When considering volume, please bear in mind the space required for posts on the shelf area.
We fire stoneware clay to cone 04 / 1062c for bisque, and to cone 6 / 1222c, or cone 9/10 (whole kiln load only) for glaze.
Our prices are as follows:
£20 per shelf for bisque firing.
£40 per shelf for glaze firing.
£140 for bisque whole kiln firing.
£200 for glaze whole kiln firing.
Need to know…..
For health and safety reasons, we do not fire anything that contains armatures, paper clay or materials that would burn or melt, and/or would create any amount of smoke, or materials/glazes that produce toxic gases during the firing.
We do not fire lead-based glazes and we won’t fire home-made glazes.
Absolutely NO AIR DRY CLAY; it will explode in the kiln!
You must send us direct links to all the clay and glaze materials you have used in your work. We reserve the right to refuse work if we think it is unsuitable for firing.
For bisque firings, your work must be bone dry and ready to fire when brought into the studio. Please bring your work to the studio the day before the firing is scheduled.
Mindfully constructed please; no thick bottoms, seams well sealed, release holes made to appendages, and air pockets/bubbles eliminated.
Anything that is not bone dry or mindfully constructed can explode in the kiln, therefore we reserve the right to not accept work for firing.
For glaze firings, to avoid damage to the work or kiln shelves, please ensure the bases of your glazed pieces are wiped clean of any glaze.
If you think your glaze may run, please include some “cookies” in the bisque firing to be used as glaze catchers during the subsequent firing.
If your work damages any of our shelves beyond use, you will be charged for replacements. The current charge for this is £100 per shelf. If your work damages our brickwork, elements or hardware, you will be charged for the full cost of repair.
We will load and unload the kiln, however if your work is particularly delicate or awkward in size/shape, you will be required to help us load the kiln and to handle your pieces.
Firing has multiple pit falls and whilst we take every precaution and the upmost care to ensure the kiln is fired correctly, we do not accept any responsibility for any damages to, or the results of, your work.
Turn around time for work can be anything between three to six weeks, depending on how busy the studio is and your firing needs.
Payment is required when your bring your work to the studio.
If you want Kenneth to fire your creations, then you must understand and agree to our terms and will be required to sign an agreement when you hand over your work. Kilns are extremely expensive and without them, our studio would not be able to function. We take great care to look after Kenneth, therefore the materials you use are the most important aspect to us accepting your work.
Please contact me to book at hot date with Kenneth or to discuss your firing needs.
