If you have completed our Beginners course or have some previous experience on the potters wheel, then our Foundations course is for you.
Engaging and hands-on, each weekly session offers a welcoming environment where you'll build more confidence and technique at the wheel. The course is tailored to accommodate and support you where ever you might be on your clay journey. You will need to have basic wheel throwing knowledge; be able to centre the clay with little or no assistance, and be familiar with the steps of opening the clay and pulling the walls.
Through a combination of group demonstrations and personalised instruction, we will discover where a little extra focus is needed and learn tips to improve your pulling and shaping techniques. Along with practicing and refining cylinder and bowl forms, we will start to explore collaring the clay, allowing for more fluid and complex pots. We will discuss clay, glazes and studio processes, whilst adhering to studio and clay best practices that promote healthy potters.
To ensure an enriching experience, each student will have access to a wheel, necessary tools, stoneware clay, and an array of glazes and underglazes to choose from. Each week, you will build upon your practice with the aim of skillfully throwing 2 to 4 pots by the end of week 4, which you will then trim, decorate, and glaze during weeks 5 and 6. Your beautiful fired pieces will be ready for collection approximately 3-4 weeks after the conclusion of the course, though this timing is subject to the firing schedules.
Please contact me if you have any questions. Studio information and polices can be found here.
The Wheelhouse Pottery Studio looks forward to helping you and your pots grow.
