Whether you're completely new to working with clay or simply looking to refresh your skills before diving into Freewheeling sessions, this six-week course is designed for you.
Engaging and hands-on, each weekly session offers a welcoming environment where you'll build confidence and technique at the wheel. The course is thoughtfully structured to support total beginners as well as those returning to clay after a break. All are welcome—come get your hands dirty and unleash your creativity!
Through a combination of group demonstrations and personalised instruction, you will learn essential techniques such as wedging, centering, pulling, and shaping the clay to create simple yet beautiful forms, including cylinders and bowls. In addition to these foundational skills, you will also learn how to trim a foot, make and securely attach handles, explore scraffito techniques, and apply glazing methods, all while adhering to studio and clay best practices that promote healthy potters.
To ensure an enriching experience, each student will have access to a wheel, necessary tools, stoneware clay, and an array of glazes and underglazes to choose from. Each week, you will build upon your practice with the aim of skillfully throwing 2 or 3 pots by week 4, which you will then trim, decorate, and glaze during weeks 5 and 6. Your beautiful fired pieces will be ready for collection approximately 3-4 weeks after the conclusion of the course, though this timing is subject to the firing schedules.
